Pregnant Lydenburg teacher mourned after Centurion accident

The 28-year-old was reportedly traveling in the car with her mother and two-year-old daughter when the tragic accident happened.

A collision on the N1 south on Tuesday afternoon, just past the Brakfontein interchange in Centurion claimed the life of 28-year-old Michelle Nel, a beloved Gr. 1 teacher from Lydenburg Primary School.

According to an article published by Lowvelder, Nel, her mother, Barbara du Plooy, and her two-year-old daughter, Carli, were all together in the car when the accident happened.

Rekord earlier reported that CERT, a non-profit and public beneficiary organisation, said when its medics arrived at the scene before 13:00, the vehicle lay across two lanes of the highway.

The highway was closed for several hours.

According to Lowvelder, Nel was on maternity leave.

It is understood that she was thrown from the vehicle. She and her unborn baby suffered serious injuries. Her mother and Carli suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene.

“Despite immediate medical attention, a pregnant woman succumbed to her injuries before she could be airlifted to a level 1 trauma facility,” CERT told our sister publication.

The circumstances surrounding the accident are still not clear.

Nel was due to give birth to her and her husband Jaco’s baby boy, Christiaan, next month.

She had been a teacher at the school for two year
