Metro spends R7-million on stalls, storage units in Marabastad

The R7-million expenditure is meant to help informal traders comply with the metro’s by-laws.

During her latest round of oversight visits, Deputy Mayor Dr Nasiphi Moya paid visits to the Tshwane Food Bank and the Marabastad Trading Stalls Project.

Moya revealed that the metro has spent R7-million on 65 new stalls and three storage units for informal traders.

“The primary objective of the trading stalls project is to offer dedicated trading zones for informal traders, promote compliance with municipal by-laws and provide support to this essential sector,” Moya said.

MMC for Economic Development and Spatial Planning, Hannes Coetzee was also present for the oversight.

The officials said the effort stemmed from the need to support local businesses.

During the visit to the food bank, it was revealed that the metro provided food to 1 531 beneficiaries from October to December 2023.

“Part of our responsibility is to assist deserving families and be prepared for emergencies. It is crucial that we maintain sufficient stock levels at the Tshwane Food Bank, and I am happy with the current levels of stock at the centre,” said Moya.

The deputy mayor also conducted oversights of the Lynnwood Road Project, the Marabastad Townlands Social Housing Project, Caledonian Stadium, and four early childhood development centres (ECDs) in Mamelodi East and West during January.

“Our visit to both the Tshwane Food Bank and the Marabastad Trading Stalls Project underscores our commitment to addressing the needs of our community and supporting local businesses. We remain dedicated to creating an environment where all residents have access to necessities and opportunities for economic growth,” Moya concluded.
