Metro police arrests seven in Tshwane

The officers arrested three illegal immigrants dealing in illicit cigarettes. A man who was delivering suspected stolen copper cables at a scrapyard in the north of Pretoria was also apprehended.

The Tshwane metro police bike unit nabbed three men for dealing in illegal cigarettes at a spaza shop, which was closed down for non-compliance in Pretoria North on Monday, January 27.

A total of 20 000 cigarettes with an estimated street value of R20 000 were found, said Tshwane metro police (TMPD) spokesperson, Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba.

Mahamba said the unit in Region 1 Section 2 attended to a complaint about a spaza shop that was closed down by Tshwane metro fire brigade inspectors for non-compliance.

“The unit revisited the spaza shop, and found it still operating,” he said.

Mahamba said three people were arrested for dealing in illicit cigarettes, illegal immigration and obstruction of justice.

He said in a separate incident on Monday, TMPD cable theft unit officers responded to a complaint in Brooklyn about cable theft in progress at a substation.

“Two suspects were caught red-handed inside the substation busy stealing cable.”

He said they were arrested for tampering and damaging essential infrastructure and possession of stolen cable.

Mahamba said the unit also recovered suspected stolen copper cables in Rosslyn, north of Pretoria.

The officers received a tip-off about two men taking copper cables to a scrapyard.

He said when the two saw the officers, they ran and left the copper behind.

Then a bakkie carrying copper cables arrived.

“When the driver saw the officers, he fled and a chase ensued. They managed to apprehend the driver and he was arrested for possession of suspected stolen copper cables.”

More metro police drug unit arrests included a drug dealer caught selling nyaope and crystal meth in Cullinan.

Drugs with an estimated street value of R13 500 were seized.
