Mams learners get helping hand to improve reading

Local learners now can look forward to improving their reading abilities, vocabulary and confidence thanks to support through a three-year project.

Mamelodi principals, teachers, parents and learners were happy to receive a donation of books, cushions and uniforms for different sporting codes on Friday.

The gift was delivered by a convoy of Ford Rangers, as part of the R1.36-million Ford SA’s Silverton fund to empower schools via the READ Educational Trust’ Rally to Read project.

Nellmapius ext 6, Vukauzenzele, PS Fourie, Nantes, Zamintuthuko, and Boikgantso primary schools, which close to the Ford SA plant were beneficiaries.

Local youth students are employed by Rally to Read to support Grade 3 and 4 learners for a smooth transition from Foundation Phase (Grade R to Grade 3) to the Intermediate Phase (Grade 4 to Grade 7).

This second phase of the three-year project is expanding its reach from the Foundation Phase to the Intermediate Phase this year to improve the learners’ reading skills, vocabulary and confidence.

Ford government affairs and transformation director Esther Buthelezi said: “The initiative, facilitated by dedicated READ trainers, focuses on resource delivery, teacher training in language methodologies, teacher digital literacy training and parental support.”

She said this is in collaboration with the Department of Basic Education, school management team (SMT) and school governing body (SGB) to provide teachers with the necessary training and support from READ field staff.

“The improved literacy and the love of reading is evident in the learners, while the teachers are better equipped with the skills and tools to provide effective education through each learning phase.”

The company is also supporting the introduction of a digital literacy programme to provide the schools with smart projectors, incorporating infographics, online videos, and real-time information access. This provides learners with opportunities to develop critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, communication, and digital literacy skills.
