Plan for stronger automotive sector in Rosslyn open for public comment

The Rosslyn Inland port precinct aims at economic growth, which in turn will be labour absorbing, provide many more residents with new employment opportunities and develop the city further.

The office of the Tshwane Speaker has commenced the public participation process on the Tshwane Automotive City (TAC) Rosslyn inland port precinct plan.

This was revealed on Thursday, January 18.

The plan is in support of the city’s strategic pillars, which aim to facilitate economic growth, and job creation, deliver excellent services and protect the environment.

Office of the Speaker spokesperson Vanessa de Sousa said public participation will run for 60 days from January 16 to March 16.

She said the plan centres around five focus areas: “economic growth, which in turn will be labour absorbing, provide many more residents with new employment opportunities and develop the city further”.

De Sousa said this will make it easier to do business, support entrepreneurship, empower individuals, invest in infrastructure and encourage new industries, which will lead to economic growth and employment.

The TAC is a shared vision and joint venture between the government and the automotive industry to transform Tshwane into a leading automotive investment industry.

The concept aims to emulate well-established automotive cities such as Shanghai in China, Autostad in Germany, and Toyota in Japan.

It also aims to assist the local automotive industry in becoming globally competitive by increasing locally manufactured parts and components.

De Sousa said TAC wants to boost the Gauteng economy by ensuring transformation in the area that will entail housing, and retail malls, among other facilities.

The TAC development is located in Rosslyn.

De Sousa said Rosslyn was chosen due to various factors, including the availability of land that can be developed.

Rosslyn is the current home of four automotive assemblers: namely BMW South Africa, Nissan South Africa, Iveco, and Tata with Ford SA Motor Company only 34km away in Silverton.

She said TAC aligns strongly with the automotive sector vision for 2020, aimed at producing 1.2 million vehicles and deepening the component-manufacturing base through the increase in the local content. They also aim to stimulate foreign as well as domestic investment in the automotive sector.
