Lavender Kontrei Mark encourages youth to take up riding

The Lavender Kontrei Mark hosted the Barebow Mounted Archers during its monthly family event this past Saturday.

The event drew visitors from as far as Mpumalanga and North West.

The two day visit was the second by the archers this year.

According to the event organisers, the aim was to galvanise the interest of the residents around the sporting code.

“Archers on horseback demonstrated shooting, speed, dance and training to improve accuracy and speed as a sport. There was also an opportunity for the public to do some bow shooting,” the organisers said.

The organisers added the event was great entertainment for the family as it had a lot of stalls, great food, lots of kids’ activities, and family fun.

Chantene de Eager, one of the aspiring riders said she had been riding since she was six years old.

De Eager said she wanted to one day own a horse as she loves the equestrian industry.

“I ride but I am not a professional rider, I pray that one day I own a horse of my own. The sport is extremely expensive too, so I need to first sort out my financial issues.”

Kayla Haines of Golden Trots also has a keen interest in becoming a professional rider, and said she loved grooming and walking horses.

“I love horses: they are very gentle and not aggressive at all. They are like any other pets, they also have bad days, and one just needs to know how to handle them on the bad days,” Haines said.

She said she also plays sports but in her private time. She said she hopes that one day when she’s a professional, she will participate on big stages such as the Barebow Mounted Archers.
