Blood bank at risk of running out of stock

Donors are urged to urgently donate blood ahead of the festive season.

The SA National Blood Service is in dire need of donations as a low donor turn-up leads to low reserves, the service has warned.

Spokesperson Khensani Mahlangu said the national stock level was sitting at 3.6 supply days meaning that without any further donations, the blood bank would run dry in three days.

“Ideally we would be okay if we would have a blood supply of four days but we would be okay if our blood bank would sit at five days. Every unit of blood can save a minimum of three lives because blood is separated into red blood cells, plasma and platelets.”

Mahlangu said the country was entering the silly season, in which a lot of blood would be needed.

She urged loyal blood donors to urgently come and donate before they depart for their respective holiday breaks.

“Less than 1% of South Africans are active blood donors. A unit of blood only lasts 42 days and, for this reason, donors need to donate regularly. Donors can give blood as often as every eight weeks,” she said.

She said the service aimed to collect 3 000 units of blood per day to ensure a safe and sufficient supply in the healthcare system.D

Mahlangu said a donor must be from 16 years of age to 75 and weigh at least 50kg.

She said on the day of donation, the donor must have had a full meal, and be in good health.

Mahlangu said many donation centres were open to the public.

“To find the location nearest to you, click on our map. Or you may consider motivating your employer to host a blood drive at your offices for the convenience of all staff members,” she added.
