East refuse site to temporarily be rehabilitated due to strike mess

The Menlo Park Garden Refuse Site on 26th Avenue in the east of Pretoria will be temporarily rehabilitated, which will lead to a 17-day closure.

MMC for Environment and Agriculture Management Ziyanda Zwane said the refuse site was facing temporary closure to clear the backlog of waste.

“Tshwane would like to advise residents and clients Menlo Park Garden Refuse Site will be temporarily closed to clear the backlog that was created by the illegal strike.”

Zwane said the site would be closed from November 10 to 26.

He said this was to give employees enough time to bring the site to a normal state of operation.

“The site will be open for operations on November 27. It should be noted that almost all the garden sites are currently overwhelmed as a result of the illegal strike.”

Refuse site users may use the following landfill sites while the backlog is being cleared:

– Bronkhorstspruit Landfill Site on Zithobeni Road, Bronkhorstspruit

– Hatherley Landfill Site on Solomon Mahlangu Drive, Nellmapius, Mamelodi

Zwane said residents and garden refuse site clients were urged to refrain from dumping waste on the parameters of the sites, as it was an illegal activity, contravening the Tshwane Waste Management By-law.

“The penalty for illegal dumping as per the waste management by-law is R5 000.”

The warning also comes after Tshwane went on a city-wide clean-up campaign to sort out illegal dumping after residents were forced to dump their waste at the gates of refuse sites and pavements across Tshwane due to poor service delivery.

The lack of services was blamed on the illegal and unlawful strike which had plagued Tshwane since July.

Zwane also led a clean-up operation at the Menlo Park refuse site after it had caught fire during the strike action. Residents at the time had also illegally dumped their refuse outside the garden refuse site.
