SPCA gets a generous donation

The animal welfare organisation had the vehicle for only two weeks before it was stolen in June.

The SPCA Tshwane welcomed the generous donation of a bakkie canopy after a resident adopted a cat from the animal welfare organisation.

The resident was adopting a kitten through the SPCA Tshwane when she heard about the theft of one of the SPCA’s vehicles earlier this year.

SPCA inspector Carlos Fernandez was doing a home check ahead of the adoption when he told the resident about the theft of his vehicle.

“It was a brand new bakkie, we only had it for about two weeks,” Fernandez told Rekord.

The bakkie was stolen from the SPCA compound in June when Fernandez made a stop at the facility to pick up some paperwork.

When Fernandez went back to his vehicle, it was gone.

“Luckily, we had a vehicle tracker and were able to recover the bakkie in Soshanguve.

“The insides were destroyed, but we were grateful to get it back.”

Fernandez said the resident, Heidi Taylor who works at Beekman, had a canopy and said she would find out if she could sell it to the SPCA at a good price.

“When she came back, she said she would be able to donate it to us!”

Fernandez said it is important that the bakkie has a canopy to protect the animals in transit.

Though animals are always transported in crates, some dogs are too large to fit into them, while others sometimes escape.

Taylor told Rekord that she was happy to donate to a worthy cause.

“When I heard about the theft of their bakkie, I immediately wanted to see what I could do to help.”

She said she was happy with her new kitten, Moon and was in the process of adopting another through the SPCA.

“Support the SPCA!” she said.

“They really do amazing work, and supporting them by adopting through them helps keep the good work that they do going.”
