Grand White dinner held in Pretoria

Pretoria hosted its first Grand White dinner party on Saturday and the jacaranda’s city’s residents dressed to impress and party the night away.

It’s a fashion truth that not everyone can wear white, but the residents of Pretoria who attended the first Grand White dinner party were more about the partying than the fashion. Hosted at the Botanical Gardens on Saturday, party-goers enjoyed themselves into the early hours of the morning.

Stephan Dau, an event co-ordinator from Germany, introduced the all-white dinner party concept to Johannesburg and Cape Town two years ago, and the event grew in popularity to such an extent that he decided it was time to bring it to the capital. “White symbolises purity and a togetherness. We are all one; irrespective of colour. This party brings all South Africans together. The focus is also on environmental issues, which is why we asked people to wear a touch of green with their white,” he said.

In keeping with this focus on the environment, the organisation Green Pot planted a tree for every 100 guests who attended the event.

Around 1 300 people attended Saturday’s event and it is estimated that it will grow tremendously within the next few years. “I have hosted similar parties in other countries where more than 50 000 people attend.”

Although people did not know where the party would be hosted until early Saturday morning, they bought tickets. “It is more interesting when we keep the venue a mystery,” Dau said.

Gerda de Sousa, a news reader at Jacaranda FM, came all the way from Johannesburg for the fabulous party. “I attended in Johannesburg last year, but the one in Pretoria is definitely better!” Jerri Mokgofe, a fashion stylist from Johannesburg, also gave his opinion: “We are all one. I have never seen something like this before – black and white dancing together.”

Yolandy Masinger, a blogger for For Fashion Freaks, said not everyone could wear white, but for the day, the colour was perfect. “We are all one. There is no individuality. It symbolises togetherness and a feeling of belonging.”

Comedian Marc Lottering was the host of the evening and the 50 shades of grey in his hair complimented his white outfit perfectly.
