A night at the zoo

Friends of the Zoo hosted their annual 5km night fun run/walk at the National Zoological Gardens of South Africa on Saturday.

Friends of the Pretoria Zoo held their annual 5km night fun run/walk at the National Zoological Gardens of South Africa on Saturday.

More than 800 participants of all ages had the opportunity to experience the night-time behaviour of nocturnal animals like wolves, owls, red pandas and hippos.

The fun started at 18:45 and the entrance fee for adults was R50. Children under the age of 12 paid R30.

“The walk also coincides with the annual Earth Hour activities where participants switched off all lights between 20:30 and 21:30 on 28 March,” organiser for Friends of the Zoo, Dirk Bester, said.

“This is in support of creating awareness for climate change on the planet,” he said.

Friends of the Zoo also organised a bring and braai for participants. Attendees brought their own meat and refreshments to enjoy at the Flamingo Restaurant after the walk.

Proceeds from the walk will be ploughed back into the zoo for a variety of projects.
