Brace for yet another ‘strong’ cold front, Tshwane residents told

The SAWS says as the cold front develops further and intensifies during the week, there would be overcast as well as rainy conditions.

Yet another “strong” cold front is expected to hit Tshwane heading into the weekend.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) announced on Tuesday that the cold front was expected to make its way to Gauteng by Thursday.

“The strong cold front made landfall in the Cape,” said SAWS.

“It is expected to reach Gauteng on Thursday. The system could lead to unseasonal rain on Thursday through Saturday.”

The agency said as the cold front develops further and intensifies during the week, there would be overcast as well as rainy conditions.

“This weather will persist during Friday when heavier falls can be expected over the western and central parts of the abovementioned provinces.

“Persistent rainfall is therefore likely to lead to localised flooding and minor disruptions of road traffic.”

SAWS also warned of the possibility of severe thunderstorms.

These conditions would result in small hail as well as gusty surface winds, which would contribute to icy roads and hazardous driving conditions.

“Motorists encountering such conditions are advised to reduce speed and observe safe following distances.”

Skies were expected to clear by Sunday.

The service advised farmers that these weather conditions would likely pose a risk to livestock, vulnerable crops and plants.

Rekord has compiled some safety tips for drivers to stay safe on the roads:

– Slow down when the road is wet. Avoid slamming on the brakes as this may cause the car to glide.

– Be prepared to move to the left shoulder in case of badly-timed overtaking from the opposite direction.

– Don’t panic when you see oil patches. Slow down gradually and steer through them.

– Approach bends in the road with caution with both hands on the steering wheel.

– Increase your safety cushion by doubling your following distance from three to six seconds.

– Turn on your headlights.

– Be mindful of other vehicles behind you as they are difficult to see through rain-spattered windows.

– Be extra careful within the first 30 minutes after the rain has started as grime and oil on the road surface mix with water and could cause the road to be slippery.
