New Wonderboompoort police station commander on a mission

Just two days in office, the new station commander found that theft of motor vehicles are high in Wonderboompoort policing precinct.

The new Wonderboompoort police station commander , Lieutenant-Colonel Portia Malatjie, is on a mission to build a solid relationship between his officers and residents.

Malatjie wants to make it difficult for criminals to commit crime in the area.

According to Malatjie, the police’s success in reducing crime in the precinct depends on the good relationship the police have with the community.

“I would like to request community members to work with the police. We must be one strong family,” she said.

Residents may work together with the police through being the eyes and the ears of law enforcement and report any suspicious activity.

“Please report criminal activities, irrespective of whether they are committed by community members or some bad police officers,” she said.

Malatjie said her management was ready to effectively deal with bad cops.

She said suspicious activities may be reported on 08600 10111 or Wonderboompoort police station on 012 335 2812.

In the first two days (Thursday and Friday last week) of joining the station, she was welcomed by high number of motor vehicle thefts.

“Our main crime in the area for the two days since I joined the station was theft of motor vehicles,” she said.

She added that this crime happens in the presence of car guards.

She revealed that the hotspots were Mayville mall, Eugene Marais hospital and Spar Mayville.

“It is situations such as these that need the police to work together with residents. Police need information that will help them track down and arrest the culprits.

“Providing such information also helps residents to be aware of what is happening in their area and exercise safety precaution to prevent being victim to crime.”

She urged residents to be vigilant and ensure that their parked vehicles are properly locked at all times.

Sharing a word of advice, she said motorists should physically ensure the vehicle is properly locked.

“You must check with your hand that all doors, including the boot, are properly locked before walking away from your vehicle in a parking lot.”

She also urged motorists to refrain from leaving valuables visible inside their parked vehicles.

“Valuables attract criminals to break into your car.”

Having joined the police in 1989, Lieutenant-Colonel Malatjie is not a new kid on the block.

She started working in 1990 at the Temba police station in Hammanskraal as a client services centre (CSC) clerk. In 1996 she moved to detective under Family Violence, Child Protection Sexual Offences (FCS) where she remained until 2003.

She then returned to CSC until 2018.

In 2018, she joined Dube police station in Winterveldt as station commander.
