TUT crowned 2022 Varsity Football champions for third time

TUT beat UJ to win the Men’s Varsity Football crown

The Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) soccer team on Thursday defeated the University of Johannesburg (UJ) 2-1 in a sizzling Men’s Varsity Football match at UJ Stadium in Soweto Campus.

The well-deserving victory saw the capital city’s side lifting the trophy for the third time since 2016 as they also won it in 2018.

Both sides started the match with eagerness and dedication to claim victory making it extremely difficult to predict the side that would take the crown.

This was because the first 25 minutes of the match saw an evenly contested affair, with TUT creating some half chances following set pieces.

UJ could have opened the scoring in the 27th minute but such an opportunity was wasted as Philane Masondo’s shot went wide off the target.

On the other hand, TUT eventually found the back of the net in the 32nd minute to take a 1-0 lead, thanks to Kutloano Manamela with a stunning volley.

However, their lead lasted just one minute as Thanda Madiba found the equaliser from a tight angle after being set up by Thulani Zandamela.

UJ almost scored their second goal in injury-time of the first half but Tebogo Lekaba cleared the ball off the line.

TUT then went close in the first minute after half-time but a cross by Hendrick Xaba was blocked by Neo Lebopa.

Madiba had a decent chance with a free-kick in the 59th minute but his attempt flew over the bar.

TUT eventually found the winner in the 83rd minute, which came via an own goal by Maselesele Makoti after fine work down the right flank from Tumelo Hope Moeng.

UJ’s attempt to find another equaliser failed, leading to wild celebrations of the Red Army.
