Security catches man stealing copper cables in Centurion

A big black plastic bag filled with rolled up electric cable and a jigsaw was found in his possession.

A man was arrested for allegedly stealing copper cables in Wierdapark on Tuesday evening.

Two Fidelity ADT reaction officers Thendo Nemalili and Thabiso Shabalala successfully apprehended a suspect around 21:25 while patrolling in the area.

The officers were stopped by a member of the community informing them of three suspects cutting cables down the road.

The officers immediately drove to the corner of Theuns van Niekerk and Uvongo streets.

“Unfortunately two suspects saw the Fidelity ADT vehicle and fled the scene in a bakkie. One of the suspects was left behind and officer Nemalili managed to apprehend him.”

A big black plastic bag filled with rolled up electric cable and a jigsaw was found in his possession.

On further investigation, the suspect confirmed that they were stealing cables in the Wierda Park area and that he was employed by the escaped suspects, according to ADT.

Leon Muller, district manager for Fidelity ADT commended the community member who informed the officers of the criminal activity.

“Well done to our officers. We do not recommend residents intervening in any way but rather report any suspicious behaviour to their local SAPS department. This is a serious criminal offence and offenders will be arrested immediately,” said Muller.

A case of possession of suspected stolen property has been opened, said Wierdabrug police spokesperson Sergeant Divine Nkuna.
