Activist urges Pta residents to fight GBV every day

“I encourage all residents to report GBV taking place within their families and neighbours to the police,” says activist against gender-based violence, Caroline Oyiya.

“We need to fight against gender-based violence (GBV) 365 days a year, and not just during the 16 Days of Activism against GBV,” an activist against GBV, Caroline Oyiya, said.

Oyiya, who is also the public relations officer for the Sunnyside CPF, said GBV cases took place every day and, therefore, it cannot be right to take GBV seriously only during the 16 Days of Activism.

“I encourage all residents to report GBV taking place within their families and neighbours to the police.”

She said the government had declared GBV a “pandemic”, which needs to be rooted out of the society.

“It is concerning that alcohol and drug abuse often lead to GBV,” Oyiya said.

“I urge people not to abuse alcohol and those addicted to drugs to seek professional help to not become perpetrators of GBV.”

Sunnyside police have recently warned Sunnyside residents of GBV.

Warrant Officer Asnath Malatsi of the Sunnyside police station warned residents about GBV last week Wednesday.

She spoke during an event where a non-profit organisation, Ntokozweni Food Bank, delivered a large number of food parcels and cleaning materials to more than 150 homeless people housed at De Villiershof.

“We are appealing to people who experience GBV to come forward and report it,” she said.

“The station has a victim empowerment centre that works together with relevant stakeholders, such as non-profit organisations, to address GBV,” she concluded.
