Tshwane metro employee injured following east substation fire

“The priority now is to make sure that the site is safe for the team to do the necessary inspection.”

A Tshwane metro staffer was injured when a substation in the Mooikloof of Pretoria caught fire on Wednesday afternoon. Metro spokesperson Hilgard Mathews said the extent of the damage was not yet known.

“One of our employees sustained minor injuries and has been admitted to a local hospital for a proper medical assessment,” he said. “The priority now is to make sure that the site is safe for the team to do the necessary inspection.”

In 2017, the substation caught fire which saw one section of it being completely destroyed and had to be rebuilt. The areas affected include Morelata park, Pretorius Park, Mooikloof, Olympus, Woodland and parts of Garsfontein. Earlier this year, the Wapadrand substation also caught fire plunging some areas into darkness for weeks.

This was also the second time the substation burnt down. In 2018, a fire destroyed all the electrical equipment stored inside. Repairs were at the time estimated to be around R80-million. Both the Mooikloof and the Wapadrand substations were set to be upgraded following the fires, but no plan of action was shared.
