LETTER: Shaun Wilkinson to the rescue

This is an area with many retirement homes and persons with disabilities, and this action is in breach of the municipal by-laws and common decency.

A.S. Paterson writes,

A major problem arose recently in the shopping centre at Groenkloof Plaza, George Storrar Street.

A new shop tenant had been allowed to commandeer, and fence-off, the pavement area outside their shop to provide an outside sitting area for their customers. This totally prevented wheelchair and pavement access, and made it impossible for persons in wheelchairs or with trolleys to navigate past this point without going into the road.

This is an area with many retirement homes and persons with disabilities, and this action is in breach of the municipal by-laws and common decency.

Our local ward councillor, Shaun Wilkinson was contacted and asked for assistance in this matter. He immediately raised the problem with the relevant persons at the municipality and the problem has now been rectified.

Thank you to Shaun, and his colleagues at the municipality, for their timely action. It is nice to know that there are still some people who are concerned for the welfare of the elderly and the disabled.
