Concern about HIV/Aids in Donkerhoek

The Lethabong non-profit organisation embarked on a massive HIV/Aids awareness campaign at an open space near their centre in Donkerthoek on Saturday.

The high level of HIV/Aids at Plot 3 and 4 in Donkerhoek in the east of Pretoria, has forced the Lethabong non-profit organisation to embark on a HIV/Aids awareness campaign.

Lethabong looks after over 40 disadvantaged children in the area and embarked on a massive HIV/Aids awareness campaign on Saturday.  Many young people attended the event held at an open space near Lethabong centre.

Residents were taught, among other things, how to protect themselves from contracting the disease and were encouraged to get tested.

Lethabong’s general manager, Balthy Ngobeni, said there was a high rate of school dropouts as a result of teenage pregnancy.

“We try to create awareness through professional nurses operating in the area,” Ngobeni said.

He said they were concerned about the careless lifestyles of many people living on the plots, and that was why it was crucial to have the HIV/Aids campaign.

“Once they go to taverns they don’t care, they behave irresponsibly,” he said.

Lethabong depends on sponsorships. They supply meals to disadvantaged children in the afternoons after school. Most of these children live within extended families.

The organisation looks after orphans, vulnerable and neglected children.

The event saw local upcoming artists providing performances to make the day memorable.
