Police probe after shooting incident at east substation

It is alleged that one guard shot another after he was caught stealing cables.

Garsfontein police are investigating a case of attempted murder following a shooting incident at a substation in Lynnwood Manor on Sunday.

“On their arrival to the scene, officers found that a security guard was shot several times in his upper body,” said police spokesperson Warrant Officer Duane Lightfoot.

The injured guard pointed out to the police that another security guard was the shooter.

“When the officers got to the suspect, who was still at the scene, they discovered that he was shocked by electrical cables and was severely injured,” Lightfoot said.

He said that both men were taken to hospital and both their conditions were serious.

Earlier Emer-G-Med said that two people were allegedly trying to steal power cables from the substation when the night shift guards came across them.

“In the process, a guard was shot and wounded while one of the perpetrators was electrocuted.”

Lightfoot, however, could not confirm whether the suspect(s) were trying to steal cables.

“At this stage, we are uncertain on what actually happened, but we are investigating. A case of attempted murder was opened by Garsfontein detectives.”

Police seized a firearm to be tested as part of the investigation.

Lightfoot said no arrests were made.
