Sunnyside CPF postpones sector forum elections – again

The second wave of Covid-19 has prompted Sunnyside CPF to reschedule sector forums elections to a date still to be confirmed.

The Sunnyside CPF has postponed all its sector forums’ elections because of Covid-19.

“We have postponed all outstanding sector forums’ elections until further notice,” Sunnyside CPF chairperson Sandile Dube said.

Dube said that it was the second postponement since the country entered into lockdown early last year, citing that the sector forums’ elections were supposed to have been completed by the end of March that year.

“We couldn’t meet the March deadline owing to spread of Covid-19 pandemic and as a result all elections were rescheduled for February this year.”

However, the current Covid-19 wave seems to have caused yet another disruption to Sunnyside CPF plan.

“With regards to the current situation, we cannot hold community meetings for elections as that would amount to negligence and putting people’s lives at risk.”

He said the postponement of meetings and ultimately elections was in line with the Gauteng provincial community police board’s directive issued early last year.

According to Dube, in an attempt to curb the spread of coronavirus, the board instructed all CPF members in the province not to call or hold community meetings.

He further clarified that although the directive did not specifically instruct the CPF not to hold elections but since elections take place during community meetings, they were unable to hold them.

He said the CPF’s optimal level performance would be determined by the Covid-19 developments, citing that they were experiencing difficulties with regards to playing a meaningful role in curbing crime.

The Sunnyside CPF had, however, managed to successfully hold three sector forum elections out of six prior to the lockdown.

“Sectors 1, 3 and 6 have already done elections.”

Sectors 2, 4 and 5 elections are still outstanding.
