Hundreds attend Magalies Market

More than 500 people on Saturday attended the first ever Magalies Market at the Wonderboom Lapa, Wonderboom South.

Friends of Magalies together with the Mattheus family hosted a market in Wonderboom South on Saturday.

The first ever Magalies Market, held at the Wonderboom lapa, was aimed at, among others, raising money to assist the Friends of Magalies pay for costs involved in maintaining the mountain and the horses and mitigating the negative impact of tighter Covid-19 regulations to affected residents during the higher levels of lockdown.

It served as direct response to tighter regulations South Africans experienced at the beginning of lockdown leading to thousands of people around the country losing their jobs as some businesses could not survive loss of income.

“I noticed that a lot of people hit hard by lockdown wanted to make income by beginning to sell or market something,” Magalies Market organiser Lizette Mattheus said.

She said the market, attended by more than 500 people, provided the affected residents an opportunity to make a living through selling various products including food, coffee beans, honey, clothes and jewellery.

The event, suitable for a whole family, provided those in attendance more to enjoy, including horse riding, free mountain walks and music.

Taking place in the beauty of deep Magalies forest made the event unique.

“Attending the event is very nice,” one the patrons Krintin Naudé said, adding that she liked the fact that it was in the mountain and it had a nice vibe.

She said she also liked that the event was smaller as it allowed people to easily adhere to lockdown regulations.

One of the vendors Gerda Coetzee said she also liked the market.

“The event is beautiful,” she said.

The organisers of the event are planning to hold the vent regularly.

Mattheus said they were planning to host the event monthly and include more activities such as trail run, hiking and mountain biking event.
