North grandfather celebrates 100th birthday under lockdown

“It was a unique experience as not everybody reaches 100, I am glad that my father made it this far,” said Patrick.

A Soshanguve resident celebrated his 100th birthday recently under lockdown with his family.

Moloko Moumakoe, better known as Mkhulu (grandfather), was born in Limpopo on 29 March 1920.

He was born and bred in Limpopo, moved to Soshanguve in 1990 to live with his son after the death of his wife as he did not have anyone to take care of him.

His son Patrick Moumakoe said he was happy to witness his father’s 100th birthday.

“It was a unique experience as not everybody reaches 100, I am glad that my father made it this far,” said Patrick.

“My father is a very active man, he wakes up every morning to clean our yard and garden.

“Before his pension my father worked at the Tshikondeni mine in Limpopo.”

Moumakoe said his father can still walk and do all the work “despite the fact that he cannot see properly”.

“Mkhulu easily forgets things people say to him and the names of people, I must always remind him of things because he has a short memory.”

He added that Mkhulu was “an example to others”.

“My father always wants to help others, he is well known for helping people in our community. Even when Mkhulu is angry, he remains calm and is a loving person,” said Patrick.

“Mkhulu is characterised by his positive attitude and kindness and it helped on contributing to his blessed long and healthy years of life.”

He said his father was the first in the family to reach 100 years.

The lockdown, however, disrupted his father’s birthday plans as the family had planned to hold a big birthday celebration for him.

“The lockdown regulations does not allow any social gatherings, that is the reason we could not make a huge birthday celebration for him,” said Moumakoe.

“I hope he will still be able to celebrate his 101th birthday so that we throw him a big birthday celebration with his friends and family.”
