N1 closure after fatal multiple vehicle accident

By the time of publishing the N1 highway between Petropoort and Wallmansthal were still closed.

Various emergency services were deployed to the accident scene before the Wallmansthal off-ramp at around 11:15 on Friday morning.

Emergency services included Medi-Edge First Responders, Netcare 911 and Tshwane Emergency Services.

“Reports indicate that two trucks and about eight cars were involved in a collision possibly because of a roadside veld fire which covered the freeway in a blanket of thick smoke,” Netcare 911 posted on their Facebook page.

“On closer inspection, most of the people escaped with little to no injuries; however, two, possibly three, people did not escape and sadly died on the scene.”

“Two trucks caught fire and multiple other vehicles collided with each other,” said Medi-Edge First Responders on their Facebook group.

Multiple people sustained injuries ranging from minor to moderate and were taken to nearby hospitals.

The N1 north and N1 south are currently closed for traffic.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area.

The cause of this accident will form part of a multidisciplinary investigation, said Medi-Edge.
