North animal centre plants trees for love

The animal shelter’s Valentine’s walk was incorporated into the tree-planting event.

Around 200 trees were planted as part of Wollies Animal Shelter’s tree-planting project on Saturday.

“We decided it was about time we start and try planting trees again,” founder Cilla Trexler said.

Trexler explained that the dogs at the shelter usually chewed up the saplings planted to create shelter over their kennels.

“As we planted the trees, we covered them because the dogs love chewing them,” she said.

The trees were necessary to provide the animals with much-needed shade.

Trexler said civic organisation Afriforum planted 50 trees during the week, while another group of people came on Friday and community members came on Saturday morning.

“Altogether we have planted around 200 beautiful trees.”

The tree-planting morning was paired with the shelter’s previously postponed Valentine’s walk, which was originally planned for 16 February 2019.

“We could not have the event back then due to the rain so we decided to combine the two this weekend,” Trexler said.

She added that they always tried to combine their events with walks as they were important for the dogs.

“It’s all about our animals.”

Trexler said members of the public were also welcome to come and spend time with and walk their three recently rescued donkeys, among the various other animals at the shelter.
