Long walk to school finally over for north learners

The MEC said he had visited the school to address an urgent request from parents in the area for scholar transport.

The long walk to school for learners at Bokamoso Primary School in Soshanguve is finally over.

This comes after Gauteng MEC for education Panyaza Lesufi confirmed in front of the educators, parents and school governing body during his visit on Friday, January 11 that his department would provide the school with scholar transport.

The MEC said he had visited the school to address an urgent request from parents in the area for scholar transport.

“Following a protest by parents and community members over the request for scholar transport recently, I decided to visit the school to address the parents’ urgent request for scholar transport. We can confirm that transport will be made available to learners who qualify as of Monday (14 January),” he said.

The MEC said the visit was a follow up to a series of meetings he had held with SMT, educators, SGB, and parents at Bokamoso.

He said as part of its “long walk to school” campaign, the department of education took seriously the plight of the school’s children – who walked several kilometres to and from school every day.

The MEC said the department undertook to take all reasonable steps to provide qualifying children with scholar transport effective from January 13.
