GALLERY: North centre for disabled children raising funds for a bus

“Our car is very small to accommodate all of them. We need a bus that we can convert for their needs.”

The Joan Mary centre for disabled children is in dire need of a bus to transport the children around.

To raise funds for the much-needed bus it held a mini-market and basket dance evening at Gerrit Maritz High School on Saturday.

The tickets for the dance were sold at R450 per family including meals while vendors paid R250 per stall.

It is also planning to auction paintings it received from various donors.

The centre looks after six disabled children aged between three and 29 years who are wheelchair bound.

“Our car is very small to accommodate all of them. We need a bus that we can convert to fit their needs,” said co-founder of the centre Elize Edgerton.

She said she started the centre because her son Johnny was born disabled, he had schizophrenia.

“I saw the need to open the centre because I know the type of care these children deserve. Not everybody understands them,” she said.

She also looks after 66-year-old Jan Theron who stays with them in their two bedroom house in Wonderboom.

“I have been looking after him since 1999 and he is now part of our family.”

Edgerton said she would gladly appreciate donations of nappies and non-preservative food items.
