Maimane donates generator for Mandela Day

Mmusi Maimane celebrates Mandela Day with the elderly people of Holy Cross Home.

Residents of ward 55 and those of the Holy Cross Old Age Home in Lady Selbourne were happy to meet the Democratic Alliance leader Mmusi Maimane on Saturday.

The DA leader on Saturday donated a generator to the home for the aged in commemoration of Mandela Day.

Holy Cross Home is a residential frail care centre and a hospice based in the west of Pretoria. The home is owned and managed by Holy Cross sisters. It also provides outreach programmes in disadvantaged areas and informal settlements.

They decided on providing the home with a generator on Saturday because of the day’s significance.

Maimane spent time with the elderly before visiting another area.

“Mandela Day signifies the selfless giving nature of the icon. We see Mandela Day as the perfect day to honour a man who is celebrated in the whole world and we think everyday should be a Mandela Day.”

On the same Saturday, Maimane also had door-to-door visits to residents in Soshanguve, Block MM.

Nelson Mandela Day is an international celebration when everyone is urged to dedicate 67 minutes of their day doing good for other people in memory of the global icon who died in 2013.

The number 67 signifies the years Mandela spent fighting for a free and democratic country.
