SCHOOL: Southdowns College staffer umpires Women’s Hockey World Cup

"The stadium was packed to capacity.”

Michelle Joubert, Hockey Director at Southdowns College recently returned from London after Umpiring at the Vitality Women’s Hockey World Cup. Commenting on her experience Joubert says,” it was really well organised, some surprising upsets with regards to results, which was good for hockey in those respective countries. It was a privilege to have been part of a very young and talented umpiring team.”

She adds that the tournament volunteers were fantastic, energetic and always there to get the crowds involved before and during matches. The event was held from 21 July to 5 August and the Netherlands defended their title but beating Ireland 6-0 in the final. “It is always good to see teams celebrate wins, share in the heartache of losing and then seeing how they keep their mentality focused throughout a very long three-week tournament.”

Joubert umpired the New Zealand vs Belguim and Netherlands vs England matches to name a few.

“The stadium was packed to capacity,” says Joubert. “An amazing atmosphere that allowed the teams to perform well and put up a good spectacle for hockey all over the world.”

Michelle was the 2017 Africa Hockey Umpire of the Year, umpired at the 2016 Olympics in Rio and has a long list of accolades as umpire over the past 10 years.

“We are very proud of Michelle for her achievements this year. We are also grateful and fortunate to have her on our team, as she has lead the development of our school hockey programme to new heights,” comments Pierre Labuschagne, Preparatory Principal.
