SCHOOL: Sutherland High School wins big at GRADS and EADS festival
Brucie was brilliantly played by Kagiso Shilabje who won Best Supporting Actor at Edenvale and was nominated for Best Actor at EADS.
The Sutherland drama team took part in the Gauteng Regional Amateur Dramatics Series as well at the Edenvale Acting and Drama Society school’s festival in May 2018.
The school’s production “Down came the rain”, directed by Aroma Lebooa and Liam Pansegrauw, had a very successful season.
It’s about a touching, sad and ultimately hopeful exploration of two vastly different brothers and how they navigate the delicacy of family and truth.
Brucie, a 14-year-old boy with mental disabilities stole the hearts of the audience.
Brucie was brilliantly played by Kagiso Shilabje who won Best Supporting Actor at Edenvale and was nominated for Best Actor at EADS.
Tlotli Kgantsi who play the role of Brucie’s older brother Michael was praised by many adjudicators for his maturity and talent in this sensitive piece, winning the Best Actor trophy at the GRADS final.
“Down came the rain” received a total of eight merit awards, 19 festival nominations and was nominated for nine awards at the GRADS final.
At the finals, the play came home with the trophy for Best Sound, Best Lighting, Best Backstage and Best Actor. They finished fourth in the festival.
The other play “Struggles” was an ensemble piece revealing the difficulties of living with ADD and dyslexia.
This simple yet slick play shows how struggles can be overcome and that everyone has hope to succeed.
The actors of this play were commended by adjudicators at each and every performance, winning Best ensemble at every festival they competed in as well as the Best Ensemble Trophy at the GRADS final.
A special mention must go to Lwazi Napakade who played the lead in this production and went on to win Best Actor in a Drama at EADS.
“Struggles”, directed by Sinethemba Msthali, received eight merit awards, 13 nominations and five festival wins.
The play went through to the GRADS final where they won the trophy for Best Ensemble, Best Set and best overall play of the series.
They then competed in EADS and once again made it through to the finals, putting on a magnificent performance to bring home yet another trophy for best play of the festival.
