Extreme motoring action at Zwartkops

Race fans from around the country geared up for the event and were thrilled as 32 overseas competitors took on South Africa’s finest on the race track.

What do you get when you throw a couple of motoring enthusiasts, supercars and a race track together?

The sixteenth passion for speed motoring event had a couple of motor enthusiasts’ engines revved this past Saturday at the Zwartkops International Raceway outside Pretoria.

Race fans from around the country geared up for the event and were thrilled to witness overseas competitors taking on South Africa’s finest on the race track.

The event featured cars from the golden age of the 1950s and 1960s such as Galaxie V8, Ford GT40, Porsche 917, Lola and Mustangs.

Legendary drivers such as Sarel van der Merwe, Leeroy Poulter, Hennie Groenewalt and Willie Hepburn also attended the event.

An event included modern extreme racing cars such as Ferrari, BMW, Lamborghini and Dodge Viper.

Saturday’s G&D Extreme Supercar races brought a certain modern style to Zwartkops.

Some of the off-track attractions included free access to the pits, a flea market, live entertainment and a kiddie’s corner.

The passion for speed weekend started with a practise and qualifying rounds on Friday, followed by the car race on Saturday and a separate motorcycle race on Sunday.
