‘Pretoria the fifth most dangerous city in the world’

New index reveals shocking scores for SA and Pretoria on global crime statistics lists.

Pretoria is the third-most dangerous city in South Africa, and the fifth-most dangerous on earth according to a new index.

It lists three other South African cities, Pietermaritzburg, Durban and Johannesburg, as being among the 10-most dangerous ones in the world.

The index was compiled by Numbeo, “a crowd-sourced global database of reported consumer prices, perceived crime rates, quality of health care, other statistics”.

According to the index, Johannesburg is the most dangerous city in South Africa, followed by Pietermaritzburg and Pretoria.

The index lists South Africa behind only Venezuela and South Sudan as the most dangerous country in the world.

Numbeo’s indices were created by compiling user ratings – how people in each city and country around the world perceived crime.

Data was also collected from various reliable sources on crime statistics and standards of living. Numbeo’s algorithms then discards statistically inaccurate or incorrect data.

The scored ranged from -2 (bad) to +2 (good).

Some of the questions asked:

– “How serious you feel the level of crime is?”

– “How worried are you of being mugged or robbed?”

– “How worried are you of being subject to a physical attack because of your skin colour, ethnic origin or religion?”

The global survey is very much in line with South Africa’s own latest crime statistics, released by the SA Police Service in October 2015.

Although the Lyttelton police station in Centurion reported a 22.2% decrease in attempted murders from the previous year, the Wierdabrug police station saw a staggering 63% increase in hijackings.

The Erasmia police station reported an 85.7% increase in sexual offences, though murder at the Olievenhoutbosch police station declined by 7.5%.

Numbeo is a widely used service, and has been used as a source by Time, Forbes, and Business Insider.
