VIDEO: Celebrating the art of coffee

Vintage Coffee celebrates coffee with a special screening.

Vintage coffee, a non-profit coffee shop in Centurion, hosted a special screening of the acclaimed documentary A Film About Coffee on Thursday, 22 January. Coffee lovers from across the province came out to watch the movie and support the store.

Hosted in the auditorium of the CCCOG Church, which operates alongside Vintage Coffee, the movie documented the time-consuming, labour-intensive and artisanal processes that go into making every cup of coffee.

The movie follows the farmers who grow the beans, from Rwanda to the Honduras and the love and care they put into growing some of the best coffee beans on earth, to the roasters and baristas who make the espressos and cappuccinos and the skill they apply to making the best cup of coffee. The movie is a fascinating insight into one of the world’s most consumed beverages.

Entrance to the event was a modest R50, which included a free espresso-based drink. As always with Vintage Coffee, all the profits were donated to one of three charities chosen every month. Information about the charities in the running each month is displayed on a shelf next to the main coffee bar, with a slot underneath each one.

Customers slot in an old 2c coin that comes with the coffee for their preferred charity. At the end of each month, the total coins are tallied, and the profits of the shop go to the charity with the most coins.

“For us, tonight was all about coffee education. Where does coffee come from? What is the beauty of it? How does it go from the process where it is grown, to where it is roasted? We are really excited about how many people came out, and about how well tonight went. We are grateful to everyone who supported us and in turn supported the charities,” said Kelsey van der Merwe, marketing manager of Vintage Coffee.
