Needy get blankets

The group of charitable bikers decided to give back to the community by donating blankets to the children of Prinshof School.

The Backbone Bikers, in conjunction with Cimarron and De La Ray Ryders, came together and donated blankets to underprivileged pupils of the Prinshof School on Sunday. Adriaan Venter, the president of Backbone Bikers, said they were approached by one of the parents to donate blankets, as winter is fast approaching.

“This is the first charity initiative we have carried out, and we believe it will not be the last. We want to continue making a difference in other people’s lives, especially children,” said Venter.

The school’s principal, Karen Swart, said they relied mostly on donations from the community and that such initiatives were always welcomed. She said the school has about 367 pupils, 70% of which come from impoverished backgrounds.

“We are a state-subsidised school, but sometimes the money is not enough and we are grateful for any kind of donation,” she said. One of the parents who initiated this donation, Antonette Janse van Vuuren, said she was motivated to do something after visiting the school a few days ago on a cold day and realised that some of the pupils needed more blankets to keep warm this winter.

“Every Sunday I bring my son to the school and I just felt that it was time to help by approaching the bikers. I hope we can continue to do more and offer our help wherever it is needed.”
