Labour courts closed amid Covid-19 lockdown

No judges will be available at court to consider any matter, nor will any member of staff be available to receive any documents.

Labour courts across the country were expected to remain closed for the remainder of the national lockdown.

“No matters will be allocated for hearing from Friday, 27 March until 16 April 2020,” said labour and labour appeal court judge president Basheer Waglay.

Matters which were already allocated were not expected to be heard and would be removed from the roll.

“No judges will be available at court to consider any matter, nor will any member of staff be available to receive any documents,” he said.

Waglay said, however, parties with urgent court matters had to explain to the registrar why the matter had to be considered during the lockdown.

“The registrar will then contact the judge on duty, who will inform the registrar whether or not she or he will consider the matter. If she or he decides to entertain the matter, it will be done telephonically with the other side being duly informed by the applicant where necessary.”
