Concert in aid of abuse victims

More than 100 people attended the Picnic and Jazz concert in Waterkloof Ridge on Sunday.

The Picnic and Jazz concert at House 185 in Waterkloof Ridge on Sunday attracted more than 100 people from all over Pretoria.

The concert was aimed at raising money to support Woman Against Rape (WAR), a charity organisation. WAR encourages all South Africans to stand up against abuse.

Their vision is to assist children and adults who are rape and sexually assault victims. They make this possible by establishing permanent facilities (safe houses), expanding empowerment programmes and pioneering a campaign to stop discrimination against all those affected by HIV and Aids through rape or any other tragic circumstances.

Safe houses are used for the provision of counselling and rehabilitation services.

Empowering programmes focus on providing invaluable income to victims, freeing them from their abusers and transforming pain into creativity.

The bands performed for free in support of WAR.

People brought their own picnic basket and listen to good music.

WAR auctioned some of the gifts that had been donated to them to raise money to run its day-to-day activities.

The founder of WAR, Janine Rowley, said she was concerned about abuse’s high levels in the country. “Someone is abused every day in this country,” she said.

Rowley encouraged people to come forward and talk about abuse to fight the scourge.

She said WAR was a small organisation established to help those abused by people they know and members of their families.

Rowley urged perpetrators to stop abuse.
