LETTER: Concerned over the vagrant community

Urban development is portrayed as a positive thing and to a very large extent it is a positive thing.

As a resident of Pretoria East, I have to realize that most of my fellow Easterners feel inconvenienced or threatened by the growth of the vagrant community in Pretoria East.

Urban development is portrayed as a positive thing and to a very large extent it is a positive thing however, taking into consideration the removal of people or the ignoring of their needs in order to portray an image of a Utopian urban development scheme also has its cost.

If we as the residents of Pretoria East simply desire to remove the vagrants who have moved into our community, we will violate the humanity of a people who are already struggling while we should explore methods of integrating all who move into our community whether or not they are homeless.

We should stand in solidarity with them finding solutions to their circumstances rather than ignoring their needs and rather than removing them from our community we should integrate them. If we fail to grasp this concept then we have failed for 25 years of democracy to recognize and embrace the true meaning or urban transformation.
