VIDEO: Gauteng school applications date announced

Gauteng education MEC Panyaza Lesufi said the process would be undertaken under new admission regulations.

Parents looking to apply for the 2020 academic year for grades 1 and 8 have been urged to evaluate schools close to them as the online applications open on 13 May.

Gauteng education MEC Panyaza Lesufi said the process would be undertaken under new admission regulations.

“These regulations seek to ensure equitable access to all learners regardless of class, race or language. The regulations also define new feeder zones that aim to overcome the apartheid geography,” he said.

Lesufi said access to public schools had been a hotly contested process over the past 25 years.

“There has been tension to open all public schools on the one hand and attempts to reserve certain schools for the privileged on the other hand.”

He said it was no secret that parents often sought the best school for their children and given South Africa’s past – the perception was that former model C schools were synonymous with quality and township/rural schools were of poor quality.

“While this is understandable, the investment that the government has made over the past 25 years has resulted in improved quality in schools in the townships.

“Therefore, I urge parents to give themselves time to evaluate the schools closest to where they live to ascertain the performance of the institution,” said Lesufi.

Applications for the 2020 academic year for grades 1 and 8 will open on 13 May at 08:00 and close on 15 July at 24:00.

Parents were urged to use the online system and log on to www.gdeadmissions.gov.za.
