UPDATE: Dros rape accused found with highly addictive ‘Cat’

Methcathinone is a highly addictive recreational drug that has been found to be difficult to treat among users.

Tests have revealed that a white substance found on the man accused of raping a 7-year-old girl at a Silverton Dros restaurant was the drug “Cat”.

Nicolas Ninow (20) was arrested in September last year on charges of rape, intimidation and possession of drugs.

He has been accused of eyeing the girl from the restaurant’s play area, following her before “snatching” her into the men’s toilet and forcing himself on her.

The National Prosecuting Authority’s spokesperson Phindi Louw-Mjonondwane said the white powdery substance allegedly found in Ninow’s possession during his arrest on the day was taken for forensic testing.

“The NPA can confirm that during the arrest of Mr Nicolas Ninow, police discovered a white substance in powder form which was then taken for forensic tests,” she said.

“Such tests revealed that the white substance was in fact a drug called ‘Cat’ (Methcathinone or M-cat).”

Ninow appeared briefly in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday where he was ordered to undergo a 30-day psychiatric evaluation at Weskoppies.

During a previous appearance his lawyer Riaan du Plessis placed it on record that Ninow has had drug abuse problems since the age of 14 and had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

He is expected back in court on 8 February.

*Though the law prohibits identifying someone accused of a sexual offence before this individual has pleaded to the charge, Caxton made an editorial decision to name Ninow following the circumstances around his previous appearance on 2 October
