Churches treat Brooklyn SAPS

Two east churches showered the Brooklyn SAPS with gifts in a bid to show their appreciation for the men and women in blue.

Christmas came a bit early this year for the Brooklyn SAPS officers as they were spoiled with gifts.

Two churches brought some festive cheer by handing out small gifts to police officers.

The Dutch Reformed Church Universiteits Oord hosted Brooklyn SAPS during their monthly station lecture on Wednesday 28 November.

The congregation took time to put together small parcels of treats.

The project coordinator from the church, Elna Pieterse, said it was “a small token of appreciation from the community’s side to thank the police for the work that they are rendering”.

“These officers would be on duty during the festive season to ensure that communities are safe.

The Doxa Deo Church in Brooklyn wrote personal letters to each SAPS member. The police officers were touched deeply by this gesture.

The pens that they received with the letters were a welcome gift to take down all the daily statements and certification of documents.”

A pastor from Doxa Deo ran the workshop for the officers under the theme “Bring order”.

In his testimony, he described the role that the police played in his life from a very young age. As a 9-year-old boy, he lost his father to crime.

His father was killed during a hijacking, and that evening in the midst of all the chaos, a police officer told him that everything was going to be OK. He said that those words brought some order to him in that moment.

Police spokesperson Captain Colette Weilbach said the gifts were heartwarming and appreciated.

She said the Brooklyn SAPS were embarking on numerous crime prevention operations this festive season to bring order to chaos.

High visibility patrols were already in place at shopping centres and malls.

“Joint operations and roadblocks to address driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs will ensure safety on the roads,” said Weilbach.
