East police on high alert during festive season

Criminals could quickly clean out a house while the homeowner was busy with chores in the backyard.

The Mamelodi West police on Tuesday came up with a new approach to preventing festive season crimes in their policing precinct.

In the recent past the police crime prevention was focused on hostels, Denlyn mall, Maseko complex and other crime hotspots.

spokesperson Captain Johannes Maheso said now they were ready to “hit” anywhere, anytime with speed.

He invited locals to use this opportunity and report any suspicious persons, children involved in crime and drugs “to have a joyous, wonderful and crime-free festive season”.

“When you go out of a house or room to do certain house chores lock the door.”

Maheso said criminals could quickly clean out a house while the homeowner was busy with chores in their backyard.

He advised residents to always inform their neighbours when they go on holiday and have a house-sitter.

“Always keep the lights on at night even when you are not around this will prevent criminals from breaking [in].”

“Improve the security in your house and maybe have an alarm or have a dog to look after the house when you are not around,” said Maheso.

“If someone has broken into your house, please inform the police and most importantly do not touch anything until the police have dusted for fingerprints.

“The police always arrest people with suspected stolen goods therefore it is very important to always have serial numbers and receipts of your property for ease of identification,” he said.

He advised residents to report any crime or suspicious person to the police on 08600-10-111.
