Whiskey tasting event a hit with locals

"A bottle is expensive and at times it is better to buy something you have tasted, you might be wasting a fortune on a brand that is not even good."

Hundreds of whiskey lovers were afforded a bespoke whiskey tasting opportunity ahead of World Whiskey day on Saturday.

The day is the time “for everyone to try a dram and celebrate the water of life with the gang”.

Whiskey lovers braved the cold to attend the 3-day event at Menlyn Park Shopping Centre on Thursday evening.

Karel De Bruin who attended with friends said she had an opportunity to taste the whiskeys before deciding what to buy.

“A bottle is expensive and at times it is better to buy something you have tasted, you might be wasting a fortune on a brand that is not even good,” he said.

Ayanda Mpa of Savannah Estates in the east of Pretoria said she couldn’t miss the event.

“No cold weather can stand in my way, I attend and appreciate the whiskeys they bring for us to taste and enjoy,” she said.

“What I also love about the event is that you are able to bring people, like friends, to attend.”

Bain’s ambassador Guy Thompson said his 10-year experience in the whiskey industry enabled him to give people, especially those trying out whiskey for the first time or switching from wine to whiskey, the right advice.

“I also teach people, as I have been learning myself, how to enjoy whiskey,” he said.

Drayman’s Highveld Single Malt Whisky from Silverton was one of the locally produced whiskeys enjoyed on Thursday.

Mouth-watering biltong and droewors from Just Biltong were also available for sale.

Patrons stand a chance to win in the #Selfie competition by taking a SELFIE with the iconic #WhiskyLiveBottle at the event,” said the organiser.

The event ends Saturday.
