UPDATE: ANC presses fraud charges against city chief of staff

VIDEO: “Aucamp is directing the city into a state of paralysis and collapse.”

The ANC wants Tshwane mayor’s chief of staff Marietha Aucamp to be arrested for fraud, it said.

This is why it had laid a case of fraud at the central police station against Aucamp, according to

ANC spokesperson Tebogo Joala.

Media reports this week alleged Aucamp has lied about having a B-Tech degree in her application form for the high profile R1.2 million a year post.

In a press statement released yesterday, metro spokesperson Selby Bokaba however denied that having such a degree was a requirement for the post, pointing to Aucamp’s “16 years managerial experience”.

Despite the denial of the media claims, Aucamp was placed on special leave pending the outcome of an investigation into the matter by the metro.

The ANC was also upset by reports that Tshwane mayor Solly Msimanga allegedly sat in on Aucamp’s interview for the job.

“In terms of regulation the mayor was not supposed to be part of the panel, but he decided to be part of it so he can score her high,” ANC Tshwane deputy chairperson Mapiti Matsena claimed.

“All this points to a systematic and a dysfunctional administration led by an incompetent employee of a party that always portrays itself as a clean governing structure.”

Matsena also accused Aucamp of becoming an acting chief of staff without even being an employee of the city which was “wrong”.

She also did not have a six-month cooling off period before embarking on the position as she was a councillor before, he said

Matsena said the ANC had questioned Aucamp’s appointment in 2016 but “were met with insults and political scoring innuendoes”.

He called on public protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane to release her findings into this case.

“Whilst she is taking time in resolving this matter, Aucamp is directing the city into a state of paralysis and collapse.”

City spokesperson Selby Bokaba said there was nothing that prevented the mayor from participating in the interview, “there is nothing in the law that precludes him from that.”

Bokaba confirmed it was true that Aucamp was in an acting position before being appointed as the city’s chief of staff.

“There were certain things at the beginning that were not done correctly and that process was rectified.”

Bokaba added that the city will give feedback on their investigation by next week.
