East police home petrol-bombed

"The motive behind this attack is yet to be established."

Gauteng police have called on anyone with information about the bombing of a house east of Pretoria recently to come forward.

The police said in a statement anyone with any information that might lead to the arrest of the people who petrol-bombed the home of an Ekangala police couple early on Friday morning should come forward.

“The husband and wife were awoken by the sound of breaking glass as what was later confirmed to be petrol bombs were thrown through a number of windows,” said the police.

The police alleged a shootout had also ensued between the husband and the attackers before they fled.

The wife, a police sergeant, was immediately rushed to hospital with burn wounds.

“The motive behind this attack is yet to be established,” the police said.

Gauteng police commissioner Lieutenant-General Deliwe de Lange expressed concern at the continued attacks against the police.

She said the attacks undermined the authority of the state.

“Harbouring a suspect is a criminal offence. These suspects live in our communities. They are our neighbours, friends and/or family. So they are known to someone.”

De Lange also called on police officers and members of other law enforcement agencies not to be deterred in their fight against crime.
