Carina Horn in action at Athletix Grand Prix final

The new South African record holder in the 100m for women, Carina Horn, will be in action on Thursday night in Paarl at the last meeting of the Athletix Grand Prix series.

Fresh off her SA record run in the women’s 100m semi-finals at the national championships last week and winning the national title a day later, Carina Horn has confirmed her appearance in the same event at the Liquid Telecom Athletix Grand Prix Series final event on 22 March 2018 in Paarl.

Horn blitzed the semi-final race in 11.03sec to outrightly own the national record after having shared it with Evette de Klerk for 3 years. De Klerk ran 11.06sec in 1990 to set the South African record, a record that was shared since 2015.

“It is a big monkey off my back. I have tried for years to break the joint record and now finally it is mine.  The next target is to break the 11sec barrier,” Horn said after the race.

Horn has come close to breaking de Klerk’s record on a few occasions.  The first time was in Madrid on 11 July 2015 where she equalled the record. The second time was a year later in Durban at the CAA 20th African Senior Championships where she finished second behind Murielle Ahouré, clocking 11.07sec.

“My coach and I discussed the record before last week’s championships and we agreed that if the weather was good, we would try and break it. It all worked out perfectly in the semi-finals,” she explained.

Horn has had a spectacular indoor season in 2018, breaking the indoor national record twice over 60m, first running 7.10sec in Eaubonne (France) on 09 February, before breaking it again two days later in Metz where Horn was timed at 7.09sec.

“We were a bit surprised about her indoor season as her start is not (yet) the best. But that bode very well for the Championships. Once we get her start right, the sub 11 is definitely on the cards,” said her coach Rainer Schopf.
