More fun, more romance and more lanterns in popular race this year

The SPAR Irene Lantern Race is back for 2018 with a race that promises to delight Gauteng runners of all fitness levels.

Every year SPAR and Irene Athletics club light up the scenic streets of the Irene Agricultural Research Council Campus with a unique night race lit with lanterns and runners dressed in headlamps and glowing accessories.

This year’s race takes place on 14 February 2018 making it the perfect outing for family, friends and couples celebrating Valentine’s Day.

Quoted in Tom Cottrell’s Runner’s Guide, the lantern-lit route is known as the “only true blue romantic run” in South Africa. It is among some of the best supported 10 km night races in South Africa having attracted an average of 4000 runners annually for the past seven years.

SPAR North Rand Marketing Director, Jerome Jacobs said that the excitement around offering such a unique experience on the annual running calendar is what keeps SPAR coming back as a sponsor year after year.

“The countryside atmosphere of the Irene area, the cool night air, safe farm environment and the softly glowing lantern light all converge to create an unforgettable running (or walking) experience,” said Jacobs.

The race route begins at the ARC-Irene Campus promptly at 19:00 with both a 10km race and 5km fun run available. The venue offers ample safe parking as well as plenty of delicious refreshments for sale and picnic areas – perfect for the couples looking to up the romance factor.

There will be cash prizes awarded to the top runners as well as loads of SPAR Grocery Hamper spot giveaways. The first 10 men, 10 women and all category winners receive gold medals and the next 100 finishers will be given silver medals. The first 3000 to finish the 5km and 10km route will receive bronze medals.

The 10km route of the SPAR Irene Lantern race also represents the first leg of the 2018 Irene Triple Challenge. Entrants for the Triple Challenge, who complete all three races in 2018, will receive a high quality T-shirt and a special shield to fit all three medals.
