NEWSFLASH: Menlyn elevator trauma still haunts girl

"She couldn`t breathe. People had to go and buy oxygenators to help her. She eventually collapsed when the paramedics got to the scene."

The mother of a girl who was trapped in an elevator at the Menlyn mall said her child was still battling to cope with the trauma.

June Mahlangu`s 16 year old daughter and a friend were stuck in the elevator at the malls P7 level on Wednesday, 6 December due to a technical failure.

The elevator`s emergency call button was not functional on the day, leaving the girls trapped for nearly two hours.

They were heard screaming for help by shoppers, and a technician was called to open the lift said Mahlangu.

“Watching the footage of the incident was difficult. We still don`t know why the emergency button was not working,” she explained.

“She couldn`t breathe. People had to go and buy oxygenators to help her. She eventually collapsed when the paramedics got to the scene.”

Mahlangu said the girl was physically well, but was still traumatised.

“We have taken her away to stay with relatives, to help her get her mind off things.”
