Pta North police, community educated on cancer

“Breast cancer is a real concern for both women and men.”

Pretoria North police and members of the crisis centre took part in a cancer awareness educational programme to equip themselves with the knowledge about the disease to share with their community.

The cancer association (Cansa) visited the police station on Thursday.

Cansa spokesperson Shari Nagel said: “Being ‘aware’ is not enough. People need to be educated on cancer, and the different types of cancer.”

She said educating the people directly involved in their communities was the best way to spread this knowledge.

“October is Breast Cancer awareness month,” said Nagel.

“It is important that all women and men – and yes, men definitely get breast cancer too – know how to self-examine themselves on a regular basis.”

Cansa representative nurse Sharon Venter said she worked first-hand with cancer patients and knew that early detection of the disease could save lives.

“Cancer is, unfortunately, one of the biggest killers. We cannot stress enough that people have to get themselves checked – whether they feel a lump or have an unnatural mole or other skin defects,” Venter said.

“Early detection is key and can save your life.”

Nagel said more information on the different types of cancer and what to look for during self-examination could be found on the Cansa website.

Pretoria North police station commander Colonel Matshediso Kgoadi thanked the organisers and Cansa representatives involved in the awareness campaign.

“Thanks also to our staff, police officers, CPF and members of the North crisis centre. Together we can make a difference in our community.”
