Sunnyside lesbian “rapist’s” case postponed

Last week, the man was granted bail on condition he did not contact the woman.

A man accused of raping a lesbian woman last month appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

He was told to comply with his bail conditions and his case was transferred to the regional court, where he will be appearing on 18 October.

The accused, who appeared in court for the fourth time since he was charged, was granted bail last week on condition that he did not contact the alleged victim.

The court heard last week that the accused was in the country legally.

The magistrate said the accused had to report to the Sunnyside police station twice a week, on Mondays and Wednesdays.

The accused was informed that should the woman make any contact with him, he ought to report the matter to the police.

Police spokesperson Captain Daniel Mavimbela said the 25-year-old man was arrested in Sunnyside last month after a manhunt.

Mavimbela said the victim was a lesbian and the alleged rapist was from one of the central African countries where same-sex relationships are considered to be an “abomination”.

He said the victim (24) was visiting a friend where the suspect and the friend’s boyfriend were also present.

“It is reported that the alleged rape occurred after the couple [the friend and her boyfriend] left the flat to buy food,” said Mavimbela.
