Drone technology to be part of Deutsche Schule robotics evening

"We want them to explore possibilities and avenues to solve problems and find answers.”

The Deutsche Internationale Schule Pretoria’s (DSP) will show off its drone technology during its robotics exhibition on 12 October.

The evening themed “Play, learn, create for the future” will showcase the school’s robotics journey highlighting past successes and introducing its innovative drone technology as a future development.

“Through robotics we do not want to fill learners with knowledge,” says headmaster Norbert Klevenz. “Instead, we want them to explore possibilities and avenues to solve problems and find answers.”

Since its inception in 2010 the school’s robotics programme has gone from strength to strength.

The school represented South Africa at the international World Robot Olympiads in Malaysia, India, and Russia. It was also invited to Costa Rica in 2017.

Learners at the school have received around 25 awards for their designs and programming skills since 2010.

“Robotics is an extremely fascinating technology and opens the doors to outstanding career prospects for our learners,” says Wolfgang Selzer, chairperson of the school governing body.

Several factors contribute to the success of robotics at the school. For one, the school has partnered with BOSCH, who generously tailored a Lego robotics laboratory for the benefit of learners. This is a first of its kind in Africa.

Also, the school has a network of support from sponsors, DSP alumni and robotics advocates to sustain and build robotics at the school.

In 2016 an outreach programme was launched in which five partner schools from underprivileged communities were introduced to the world of robotics.

“This will help empower the next generation of Africans to invent their future,” said DSP head of robotics Warren Markley.
